How this simulator models the 50th Hunger Games

Quarter Quell Mode runs the doubled reaping through the same engine as a standard Games, scaled up for an arena holding 48 tributes instead of 24.

A reaping built for 48

The Second Quarter Quell doubled the reaping: four tributes from every district instead of two. Quarter Quell Mode loads that exact field — twelve districts of four — and hands it to the engine pre-configured, with district-flavored attributes already switched on. One click from the button above fills all 48 slots so you can go straight to the bloodbath.

What changes at 48 tributes

A larger field reshapes the whole run. The opening Cornucopia bloodbath is twice as crowded and far more lethal; almost no one walks out of it alone, so early alliances carry more weight. The arena also takes more rounds to thin, which means the day and night cycles and the mid-game feast all matter more before a finale is even possible. Expect longer games and a higher body count than a standard 24-tribute simulation.

District Mode and the Career imbalance

With District Mode on, all four tributes from a district inherit that district's edge — so the Career districts (1, 2, and 4) field a deeper, deadlier pack than they ever could in a 24-tribute game. That lopsided start is exactly the problem the outsider alliance forms to fight in the novel, and you can watch the same pressure play out in the numbers: a stacked pack at the Cornucopia versus everyone else trying to survive long enough to even the odds.

It re-rolls the Quell — it doesn't replay the book

This is a probability sandbox, not a recreation of the novel's story. The engine has no idea who is “supposed” to win — Haymitch is just one name among 48, and most runs end nothing like the book does. That is the point: you are re-rolling the 50th Games to see how else it could have gone, not watching a fixed retelling.

The 48 Tributes of the 50th Hunger Games

For the Second Quarter Quell, every district sent four tributes — two boys and two girls — instead of the usual two. Below is the canonical roster as named in Suzanne Collins' novel.

Sunrise on the Reaping Plot Summary

What happens in Sunrise on the Reaping — the spoiler-free overview, with full ending available behind a click.

Sunrise on the Reaping is Suzanne Collins' 2025 prequel, set 24 years before Katniss volunteers in District 12. It follows a 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy through the 50th Hunger Games — the Second Quarter Quell, the year the Capitol doubled the reaping and pulled 48 children into the arena instead of 24. Haymitch is reaped on his own birthday, torn from the girl he loves and shipped to the Capitol with three other District 12 tributes. The book is the story of how he won, what that victory cost the people he loved, and why the broken, hard-drinking Haymitch who later mentors Katniss is the man she meets.

District 12, the morning of the reaping

Haymitch Abernathy is 16 — and the reaping falls on his birthday. He brews moonshine to keep his mother and younger brother Sid fed, and slips into the woods to meet Lenore Dove Baird, a Covey girl whose family was forced to settle in District 12. Lenore Dove gifts Haymitch a flint striker shaped like a bird merged with a snake — a quiet act of defiance that will haunt every page that follows.

A Quarter Quell with double the tributes

The 50th Games is the Second Quarter Quell. Per the card President Snow reads aloud, each district must send four tributes instead of two — 48 children to the arena, "as a reminder that two rebels died for every Capitol citizen." It is the deadliest setup in the history of the Games.

The Newcomers vs. the Careers

In training, Haymitch falls in with Maysilee Donner, the oddsmaker Wyatt Callow, and a tiny 12-year-old from District 3 named Ampert — Beetee Latier's son, reaped to punish his father's rebellion. The four form the Newcomers, the first known alliance to challenge the Career pack from the inside.

A win that costs everything

Haymitch wins. But what the Capitol does to the people who loved him — and what he learns about the propaganda machine that runs Panem — is the part of his story Katniss never knew, and the reason a sober Haymitch could never have mentored her.

5 Big Reveals From the Book

Sunrise on the Reaping answers questions Hunger Games fans have been asking for fifteen years. Tap each to expand.

To honor Lenore Dove, the girl he loved.

Lenore Dove Baird raised geese in District 12, and used them as a metaphor for their love. Before Haymitch left for the arena she told him, "Just like my geese, I mate for life. And then some. Forever." In the epilogue Haymitch reveals that Katniss bringing him goose eggs after the war is what finally lets him grieve.

Sunrise Characters & Their Trilogy Echoes

Every major Sunrise tribute maps onto a Mockingjay-era character. Suzanne Collins built the prequel as a mirror, not a sequel.

Sunrise
Louella McCoy
Original Trilogy
Katniss Everdeen

Haymitch first sees Katniss with her braided hair and is hit by how much she looks like Louella. The nickname "sweetheart" carries over without him meaning to.

Sunrise
Maysilee Donner
Original Trilogy
Johanna Mason

A sharp-tongued ally Haymitch initially resents and eventually loves like a sister — the same arc Katniss walks with Johanna in Mockingjay.

Sunrise
Ampert Latier
Original Trilogy
Beetee Latier (and Rue)

Ampert is Beetee's 12-year-old son: brilliant, technically gifted, willing to die to end the Games. His death cracks Haymitch open the way Rue's death cracks Katniss.

Sunrise
Silka Sharp
Original Trilogy
Cato

A District 1 Career who reads as cruel but is, in the end, another child the Capitol fed into the meat grinder. Haymitch reaches the same realization Katniss does at the finale.

Sunrise
Lenore Dove Baird
Original Trilogy
Lucy Gray Baird (Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes)

A Covey girl whose seditious songs echo Lucy Gray's. The book dances around whether Lucy Gray is her grandmother without ever giving a straight answer.

Sunrise
Plutarch Heavensbee
Original Trilogy
Plutarch Heavensbee

Same character, decades earlier — already filming with a propagandist's eye and already planting seeds of rebellion. Sunrise shows the through-line from cameraman to Gamemaker.
